OECD 111: Hydrolysis as a function of pH & abiotic degradation
The OECD 111 Test Guideline describes a method to determine the rate of hydrolysis of a chemical in water at different environmentally relevant pH values. Non-labeled or labeled test substances can be used to measure the rate of hydrolysis. The concentration of the test substance and the hydrolysis products are quantified after incubation in aqueous buffer solutions of different pH values (4–9) and at different temperatures in the dark.
Hydrolysis is one of the most common reactions controlling abiotic degradation in the environment. Therefore, hydrolysis is important to test because it can influence the persistence of substances in the environment.
