Crop field trials: Volatilization

Volatilization field trials (e.g., OPPTS 835.8100) are required for crop protection products if laboratory studies show significant volatilization from soil. In actual use, volatilization from soil, water and plant surfaces can be important emission routes, potentially affecting operators and bystanders via inhalation and having effects on non-target species and adjacent crops. Field studies are designed to reflect real-world application practices in representative locations; they include application to bare soil and, if appropriate, standing crops. Air sampling is carried out over many days to establish a dissipation curve. Volatility and air concentrations are reported for the product and any degradation products previously identified in laboratory studies.
