Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is secreted by the anterior pituitary gland and is an important part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. 

ACTH effects the production and release of cortisol from the cortex of the adrenal gland. It also has an important role in the circadian rhythm of many organisms. 

Increased and decreased levels of ACTH are indications of disease; further tests need to be performed to determine the reason for these changes.
