Fixator osteotomies

Fixator osteotomies lengthen and align bones, when fractured or deformed. Bones are held in place (fixator) allowing the two cut bone segments (osteotomy) to heal. Segments are pulled apart gradually by adjusting the fixator. This is called the distraction phase. The new regenerate bone forms in the gap between the bone segments. Consolidation is the bone lengthening as the regenerate bone gradually solidifies.

The internal or external fixator, after aiding alignment, may then be removed. External fixators are metal scaffolding mostly located outside of the body but pass through the skin and muscles, attaching to the bone with pins or wires. Internal fixation devices, such as a Smith & Nephew locked distal femur plate, attaches to the bone directly with screws. Some internal fixators are guided by an External Remote Controller (ERC) adjusting the device inside the bone.
