The unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) model is used to cause renal fibrosis, where the primary feature of UUO is tubular injury as a result of obstructed urine flow. 

The UUO serves as a model both of irreversible acute kidney injury and of events taking place during human chronic kidney disease (CKD). 

The experimental procedure involves ligation of the ureter. Surgically created UUO can be experimentally manipulated with respect to timing, severity and duration while reversal of the obstruction permits the study of recovery.
